A Difficult Week

A Difficult Week

Well, I didn't do a blog last week. I just thought I'd have a day off.

And this week's blog... well, what can I say?

Stressed.

All week.

My grandson went to Spain on holiday and asked me to look after his two rabbits, Pip and Demi, while he was away.

Sadly, on the second day they were away, both rabbits died.

I honestly can't be sure why.

I checked them over and there weren't any obvious signs of what had happened. At first I wondered if it could have been heatstroke, or perhaps something had frightened them during the night.

I even had a good look around to make sure nobody had been in the garden and somehow poisoned them. I know that's a long shot, but when something like this happens, your mind starts going through every possible explanation.

I'm pretty sure now that they had RVHD, and sadly there wasn't anything that could have been done for them.

Bless them.

The hardest part of the whole week has been knowing that I would have to tell my grandson.

I knew how upset he would be. He loved those rabbits, and just the thought of him coming home to find out that Pip and Demi were gone was heartbreaking.

I made the decision not to tell him while they were still on holiday.

I knew he would be devastated, and I didn't want him spending the rest of his holiday worrying and feeling sad when there was nothing he could do.

So I waited until they were home.

Yesterday I finally told them, knowing they were coming home today. At least it meant he had some time to process the sad news before coming home and having everything hit him all at once.

I can honestly say it has been a weight off my shoulders telling them, even though I know the news is incredibly sad.

And strangely, I think I've probably cried more than he will.

Not because they were mine, but because I knew how much he loved them. Sometimes seeing someone you love hurt is harder than experiencing the hurt yourself.

I'm going to let him get home and settle back into normality, and then I'll call and see him.

Hopefully he won't be too upset for too long.

People often say that kids are resilient and get over things quickly, but I'm not sure that's entirely true. They might process things differently to us, but that doesn't mean they don't feel them deeply.

Sometimes they just don't show it in the same way we do.

Anyway, that's me for this week.

Definitely not the blog I expected to be writing, but sometimes life throws things at you that you simply can't plan for.

I hope everyone has had a good week and, as always, if you've taken the time to read this, thank you so much.

It really does mean a lot.

And Pip and Demi... bless you both. ❤️
