A Week to Remember – Discovering Jedburgh

A Week to Remember – Discovering Jedburgh

Well… what a week.

Without a doubt, the highlight has to be my visit to Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders. I went with no expectations at all—just a sense of curiosity and a camera in hand. But I can honestly say, I didn’t expect to fall for the place the way I have.

It completely took me by surprise.

The weather tried its best to put a dampener on things—overcast skies, strong winds, not exactly the dream conditions for photography. But instead of chasing wildlife like I usually would, I made a decision: slow it down, switch to my wide-angle lens, and just explore.

And I’m so glad I did.

I found myself wandering through quiet woodland paths, the kind that instantly make you feel at ease. There’s something about being surrounded by trees, the sound of the wind moving through them, that just resets everything. It wasn’t about “getting the shot” this time—it was about taking it all in.

And what a place to do it.

Within such a small area, you’ve got everything—a castle, a river, and the stunning Jedburgh Abbey standing proudly as a reminder of the town’s history. Everywhere you turn, there’s something worth capturing.

I’ve taken plenty of photos, but I’ve not even had chance to edit them yet. Even so, I already know there’s something special in that collection. More than anything, though, I’ve come away with something even better—a feel for the place. That understanding that next time, I won’t just be exploring… I’ll be planning.

And I’ll be ready.

What really blew me away was the wildlife potential. This area is alive. Short-eared owls, curlews, foxes, badgers—and even red squirrels. Just hearing that was enough to get the mind racing with possibilities.

Where we stayed made it even more surreal. Over breakfast, we were told they regularly get badgers and foxes visiting the garden.

Just imagine that.

Moments like that remind me how lucky we are to have places like this right on our doorstep. It’s easy to forget sometimes, but trips like this bring it all back into focus.

And now… it’s sparked something.

I’ve got my sights set on more adventures—South Wales for its dramatic landscapes, and further down to Devon and Cornwall. If the summer plays ball, I’m hoping to turn those ideas into reality.

Because if this week has taught me anything, it’s this:

Sometimes the best experiences come when you don’t plan too much… and just let the place reveal itself to you.

Thank you for taking the time to read my blog—it really does mean a lot.
