The Early Bird Catches the Woodpecker

The Early Bird Catches the Woodpecker

That distinctive laughing “yaffle” was coming straight at me through the trees.

I thought to myself — no, this isn’t happening.

Then, in a flash of dark green, it came out of the trees and headed straight for a fence post right in front of me. A green woodpecker. I couldn’t believe it — I’d been hoping for this shot all week.

A proud moment — my first close encounter with a green woodpecker in Frickley Country Park.

I was in Frickley Country Park, standing quietly under an apple tree. Woodpeckers often eat fallen apples in autumn, so I thought I’d give it a try… a little early, I know, but there was always a chance.

my lucky viewpoint under the apple tree.

Two years ago, the green woodpecker was seen in the park, but mostly near the old gamekeeper cottages. Now, they seem to have established themselves so well they’re popping up in the main park. And honestly, that’s just fantastic to see.

As it landed in front of me, I was struck by just how stunning this bird is — the vivid green plumage, the proud stance, and that strong, echoing call. It stood tall on the post, head tilting as it scanned the ground.

I followed its gaze and noticed a few ant nests close by. No wonder it stopped here. I know this will be a regular feeding spot — which means more chances for photos.

The green woodpecker’s favourite snack — nature’s buffet.

The light was perfect, the sun casting a soft glow. My ISO was set around 320, so I knew even if I needed to crop in for social media, the noise would be minimal.

The adrenaline rush hit hard — and it was exactly what I needed that day. Moments like this remind me that not everything in life is difficult or heavy. This is why I fell in love with photography in the first place.

Sitting and waiting for wildlife takes patience — and maybe a little skill — but I love it. The anticipation, the waiting, that split second when a rustle in the grass or a call from the trees turns into a magical encounter… in those moments, nothing else matters. You’re just there.

Moments like these remind me to pause and be present. When was the last time you felt that kind of peace?
