“Watching the Deer: Beauty, Worry, and Mental Health
This week I spent some time capturing video footage of the deer at the country park. I shared the clips on local media, thinking local people might enjoy seeing them—and maybe even be tempted to visit the park themselves. The park is 74 hectares, so spotting deer is never guaranteed, but it’s always possible.
The response was mostly positive, which I loved, but as usual there were a few negative comments. One in particular really got under my skin: the idea that poachers would come with dogs and kill the deer. Normally, I shrug off these kinds of remarks, but this time they hit me hard. They knocked me sideways and affected my mental health more than I expected, even making me question why I bother sharing.
The very next day, I heard that the UK is relaxing some of the cull laws for deer to help farmers protect land and crops. Apparently, the deer population is thriving—and I’ve noticed it myself this year. At first, like everyone else, I worried that gamekeepers might start shooting for sport. I sincerely hope that doesn’t happen. The deer are so beautiful, and their presence is a joy to witness.
I haven’t read the full story yet, so I don’t want to share anything inaccurate. From what I understand, they’ll allow the culling of bucks but not does with dependent young. Let’s hope the rules are followed and the deer are protected as much as possible. It’s incredible to think that these gentle creatures could be damaging woodlands, but I suppose balance is complex.
Despite everything, I’ll continue posting my videos. They won’t influence poachers, and I want others to experience the beauty that melts my heart. I’m still waiting on my #3 trail camera, which has been delayed for over a week, and I’m more eager than ever to set it up and capture more deer footage.
